Tom has a bad reputation throughout because he cheats on his wife. Both Tom and Daisy have a very poor and unstable relationship. There are times where Tom was cheating on his wife and where he is abusive to his wife. One reason is that he has an affair with his mistress, Myrtle. He also has an affair with her. I first met Tom Buchanans mistress. The fact that he had one was insisted upon wherever he was known. His acquaintances resented the fact that he turned up in popular restaurants with her and, leaving her at a table, sauntered about, chatting with whomsoever he knew (Fitzgerald 24). Tom only cares about the wealth and money he has. This is an example of Tom cheating on his wife. Tom treats his wife and other women like it are just another object. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved anyone except me (Fitzgerald 130). In the first place, Daisy is already taken by Tom Buchanan. Daisy isnt really satisfied with Tom because their relationship is unstable. Gatsby wants to prove himself that he wants to be with Daisy by attacking Tom with his words. He tried to use his words by saying false things about Daisy. Tom has a slight advantage over Gatsby. Most of the money Tom had was inherited through his family. Tom also exposed Gatsby about his criminal past. In the end, Tom wins the argument and prevented Gatsby earning Daisys love back. Even though if Daisy isnt satisfied with Tom, she is still safe and secure with him because of the money he has.

A Research Study On Conservation Genetics - 2498 Words

Introduction Conservation genetics is actually a recent evolutionary theory and practise of genetics on species in order to reduce their risk of extinction. Some relevant studies improve the role of conservation genetics in specific type of species. There are so many long-lived species worldwide, either amphibians or mammals which nowadays are limited and also distributed in certain areas. Most of them can be found into small, fragmented isolated populations due to pollution, invasion of exotic species, over-exploitation and most important due to habitat loss (Frankham et al 1999). Their amazing long life span shows both advantages and disadvantages. More living diverse species means more stable ecosystem and regular flow of the food†¦show more content†¦Advanced genetic tools using mtDNA, microsatellite markers, protein and some other implements related to genetics, results to significant information of which scientists interpret to conserve species facing current threats. Bears The carnivorous Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos L.) is a North American subspecies of the brown bear and is nowadays the most widely distributed ursid. Nielsen et al (2006), likens the Grizzly bears as keystone species suitable for discovering conservation habitat modelling from a survival and occupancy framework. During the past century their population have declined noticeably throughout much of North America, mainly due to susceptibility from low density, high trophic level, low reproductive rates and late maturation. Also, the increased illegal human access causes the mortality of most of the grizzly bears. Their demographies has also been changed; the brown bear in the lower 48 states has been reduced to 1% of its original area. The estimated population size has fallen from 100,000 in the early 19th century to 1000 in 1986 (Waits et al 1998). Trophy hunting is

IT on Everyday Life

Introduction The information revolution was sparked in the mid 20th century, when scientists built the first programmable electronic computers. Since then, the growth of IT has become a major and significant aspect of people in their daily lives. Today, many people depend on IT either directly or indirectly. This paper critically examines how IT aspects affect our daily lives as employees, students, family members and community membersAdvertising We will write a custom essay sample on IT on Everyday Life specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Discussion IT and Human Survival Since IT was invented and taken to the public domain, it has become a major aspect of human survival in the world, especially in the developed world (Michael 2009). Many people have become too dependent on IT as a means of life, and this has made IT a major human need in many areas of the world. As William (2011) asserts, one way that IT has become an important comp onent of human survival is by providing efficient and cheap communication. Information has been a very important aspect of human survival for as long as human beings have existed. The communication of this information is therefore very important for individuals and communities. Today, this communication is in terms of money transfer, information sharing on social networks, and accessing official information from government agencies through online platforms such as online portals. Internet has also made it very possible for people to access jobs that are miles away from their location. Impact of E-commerce According to Mathew (2010), electronic commerce has made it possible for businesses in one area to be able to access markets that are many kilometres from their geographical locations. A good example of businesses that have been able to use e-commerce to take advantage of markets far away is Amazon, which is one of the oldest online businesses. The advantages of e-commerce are not only oriented to the businesses only, but also to the consumers (Wesley 2011). Consumers are able to easily buy directly from manufacturers, who are geographically very far from them and this means that the consumers of a product that is not produced locally, are able to enjoy the product that is produced elsewhere. Social computing As Maxwell (2009) notes, social computing has become a very easy way for people to socialize. While there are many negative things that have been attributed to social computing such as internet addiction and deterioration of real social life, social life can also be seen as a positive way for people to socialize and reach out.Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is especially important for people who are physically disabled, since they can still meet their friends on social networks and virtual chartrooms. Research shows that many people who have l ost self esteem and are unable to freely socialize with people in the real world are able to get their esteem back if they have a social media they use, because it is easier for them to express themselves on the cyber sphere (Gerald 2009). Future of social computing The future of social computing can only be seen from a speculative point of view (Danileson 2009). There are those who believe that as time goes, more people who are unable to cope in the real world, will go online and start having virtual lives. This will therefore start affecting even those who are not deep into the virtual online world. These people argue that in future, social computing will become more acceptable and the cyber sphere will help all people live more enhanced lives. On the other hand, some argue that social computing will get out of hand and affect people negatively, by making it impossible for important social developments to occur or for people to make meaningful relationships. IT and efficiency Info rmation Technology has definitely increased efficiency in many ways in people’s lives. One thing that has benefited from IT to gain efficiency is money transfer. With the help of information technology, money transfer has been made much easier and simpler, and processes that used to take days or even weeks to complete, can today be completed in a matter of hours or minutes. Communication has also become easier and cheaper as a result of developments in IT. This can be found within organizations where networks have been used to increase efficiency in the way information is shared among various departments. Databases have brought about a new way to manage and retrieve information efficiently. Engineers now don’t have to go through the heavy tasks of designing models on paper using a pencil and thousands of lines. Computer Aided Design is a software-based way for such engineers to easily and efficiency produce, modify and redesign models of whatever things they are design ing, such engines, airplanes, vehicles and buildings.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on IT on Everyday Life specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More IT becoming a necessity Information Technology has changed how the world works, and individuals don’t have a choice, but to acquaint themselves with the technology. Computers have become a necessity, because to access much important information such as that from government agencies, they have to use computers. Without a computer and an internet connection, it has become very difficult for individuals to live. Most government agencies have continually moved their services into the cyber sphere and for individuals to access these services, they have to be conversant with IT. IT and student works Modern IT systems have made student work easier and better. Students are able to access a lot of information online for their research. As James (2009) points out, assignments ca n now be better researched online in the pre-IT times, unlike earlier, when the library was the only source of information. Today, with millions of web servers on the internet, including journals, blogs, electronic encyclopedia and other forms of information, a student can access information to enrich his or her assignment. With a computer, a student can produce a neat document using word processors such as MS word, and either submit this document in an electronic format or print it out using a printer. These IT systems such as computers, softwares, printers and photocopiers, have not only made the work of the student better, but also easier to manage, thus making it possible for them to produce high quality works. Disadvantages With the advent of these IT systems, it is easier for students to cheat in their work, because the students can easily copy information directly from the internet, instead of reading and synthesizing the information in order to produce their own work. As a r esult, these IT systems can also be seen as hindrances to the development of education and the quality of education that the students will gain from school. The other disadvantage of these systems is that they are only accessible if one has an internet connection and therefore, may not be useful if there is no internet connection.Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Conclusion Information Technology will continue to be a major contributor to human survival. Scientists argue that by the year 2035, IT singularity will have occurred, which means that computers and humans will be able to interact at a physiological level, and that the computers will be more intelligent than human beings. Whether that is or is not possible remains to be seen. However, the fact that IT has been a major contributor to human existence is not debatable. Identify Reports Into Failures to Protect Individuals from Abuse free essay sample

This is the latest case of a failed system to protect individuals from abuse. He was able to abuse children in his dressing room and on the hospital wards he used to visit. Nurses said they knew what was going on and told the children to pretend they were asleep when he visited. A boy scout that was abused in Jimmy Savile’s dressing room said they were alone and when someone came in Jimmy Savile positioned himself so that the person could not see where his hands were and what they were doing. There is a record to say that people did try to come forward and try to actually make some allegations and they were not believed because it was so difficult to believe that somebody with such status, power and authority would abuse this power and sexually abuse. Although there is evidence of abuse occurring, Jimmy Savile passed away last year before this was raised. She took it upon herself to place a hidden camera in the room and secretly film what was going on. The film showed her mother who suffers from Alzheimer being slapped in the face, stomach and the arms. There was times when the woman (who also suffers from arthritis) was manhandled and was not greeted when staff entered the room, instead they put the television on and watched it while seeing to her. There was one time they put her to bed at 5:30pm, they never switched the television on for her they just left her lying in her bed until the next morning. Despite three inspections in a period of two years – and several letters to management from whistle blowers and former employees – the atrocities went untackled until it was televised on BBC Panorama, now the home has been closed and eleven members of staff have been arrested and jailed under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Pre-College Summer Programs Should You Go

Pre-College Summer Programs Should You Go SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you're contemplating your summer plans, you may want to consider pre-college summer programs. These programs offerhigh school students the opportunity to live and learn on a college campus. In this article, I'll explain the different types of programs and let you know the benefits and drawbacks of attending them. Furthermore, I'll let you know if doing one of these programs can help you get into college. What Is a Pre-College Summer Program? A pre-college summer program offers high school students the opportunity to take classes at a college and experience college life during the summer. Many programs offer a residential and commuter option. Students can stay in dorms with their peers, or they can commute from home if they live close to the college. Typically, these programs range anywhere from one to eight weeks. During these programs, not only are students able to take classes from college professors or visiting scholars, but they’re also able to listen to lectures from alumni and participate in social activities. Many selective private colleges, including Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia, offer pre-college summer programs for high school students. Some of theseprograms are open enrollment (anyone can attend), and others require admission through an application process. The selective programs typically require teacher recommendations, application essays, and standardized test scores. Check a specific program’s website for its admissions requirements. Possible Benefits of Pre-College Summer Programs Spending part of your summer studying at college or a university may not sounds like the most fun, but it canoffer a number of potential benefits. Prepare for College Life For many students, adjusting to college life can be very difficult. A pre-college summer program enables you to spend time on a college campus and take classes from college professors. These programs can help ease the transition to college life when you go to college. You’ll be more familiar with the expectations of a college class, and you’ll be more comfortable navigating a college campus. Explore Your Academic Interests Pre-college programs allow you to take classes in subjects you’re interested in, or you can discover new interests. You can take courses in a wide variety of subjects like computer science, theater, economics, and philosophy. Enhance Your College Resume Colleges do like to see that you’re taking advantage of your summers to participate in meaningful activities. By attending a pre-college summer program, you can demonstrate your interest in academics and show that you’re motivated to do more than what’s required to pursue your academic passions. Exposure to a Specific College If you're strongly considering attending a certain college, going to its summer program can help you figure out if it's the right place for you. You'll get a feel for the campus and its location, and you may get the opportunity to interact with current students and professors. You'll come away with a better sense of whether you can see yourself thriving in that environment. Make New Friends You shouldn’t discount the social benefits of attending these programs. You can meet people from around the world and form meaningful relationships that will last beyond the program. Keep in mind that there are potential costs of attending these programs. Possible Drawbacksof Pre-College Summer Programs Though many students really enjoy attending these programs, there are some issues to consider. Cost Pre-college summer programs are expensive. For example, an 8-credit course at Harvard’s seven-week secondary school summer program costs $5,900 for tuition and $5,400 for housing. That doesn’t even include transportation costs if you don’t live near Harvard. However, Harvard does offer some financial aid that covers partof the tuition forstudents with outstanding academic records who demonstrate financial need. The all-inclusive cost for the three-week Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes is $6,300. That includes room and board and transportation between Stanford and San Francisco International Airport. These Programs May Not Help You Get Into College Many college experts believe that going to a pre-college summer program may in fact hurt your chances of getting into a selective college. If you go to a summer program at Brown and you apply to Cornell, Cornell may assume that you’re more interested in Brown. Also, due to the cost of pre-college programs, some admissions counselors believe that these programs are basically summer camp for wealthy students. Many advise students tofind more creative and low-cost ways to explore their passions. For example, you can volunteer to do research with a local college professor or work at an art museum. However, there are summer programs that will undoubtedly impress college admissions officers. Free, highly selective summer programs like Research Science Institute and the Young Engineering and Science Scholars will greatly enhance your college application because they only admit a limited number of exceptional students. Perfect Zero/Flickr Is a Pre-College Summer Program Right for You? I won't advise you whether or not you should do a pre-college summer program. That's your decision. However, if you can afford to attend one of these programs and feel like it would be a good option for you, I recommend tailoring it to your interests. Take courses that are related to your intended college major, or go to a program at a college that you may want to attend. Also, I don't think that doing a costly program will substantially hurt or help your college applications. However, it can be helpful if you excel in the program and get an outstanding recommendation from a professor. Additionally, if the program stimulates an academic interest or prepares you to do well in school, it can indirectly help your chances of gaining admission to the most selective colleges. What Are Some Well-Known Pre-College Summer Programs? If you do decide attending one of these programs is a good choice for you, here are some popularoptions to check out: Duke TIP Duke TIP serves students as young as 4th grade. Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes and High School Summer College These are two different summer programs at Stanford. At the High School Summer College, you can take a quarter of Stanford classes with Stanford students. The Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes offer a three-week residential program for students to live in Stanford housing and take a class not often given at the high school level. Summer Institute for the Gifted This program is conducted at colleges across the country. It is designed for gifted and talented students from 5-17 years of age. There are residential and commuter programs. Summer@Brown Summer@Brown offers nearly 200 courses that range from 1-4 weeks. They are designed to reflect Brown's liberal arts curriculum, and they're taughtat the level of first-year college courses. To find the right program for you, there are a number of factors to consider: your budget, the length of the program, the available courses and credit options (some programs offer courses for college credit), and the location of the program. If there's a college that really intrigues you, check the school's website to see if it offers a summer program. You can use the Summer Program Finder to identify a program that fits your needs and interests. You can spend your summer at the beach or college. Or both. Recap Pre-college summer programs provide you with an opportunity to experience college life, explore your academic interests, and make friends. Even though these programs can help prepare you for college, just going to one won’t significantly impact your chances of getting into a selective college. If you’re interested in a pre-college summer program, you can find one at colleges across the country. You’ll be able to take classes in many subjects that aren’t usually offered at the high school level. What's Next? My political passport Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

My political passport - Essay Example Another thing that would change would be my social life. A stress that I currently do not have would come from the endowments and charitable organizations that would constantly ask me for donations. I am sure that the mega-rich have constant requests from these types of organizations. I would want to use my money for good, but there are so many worthy causes I would not be sure which would be best to give to. For example, I would love to help cure cancer, but which research facility would be best? The only way to know would be to get out and mingle with the people that run these organizations. Instead of watching football on the couch with my buddies, I probably would be spending more time at galas and openings sponsored by these various groups and individuals. I think that one of the biggest differences in my life would be the exposure my wealth would bring to me. Simply because I am rich, people will judge all of my actions in a different light than they would a middle-class guy. I f I would drive myself around in a 1985 Toyota Corolla, the media would probably call me cheap and tacky. If I am driven about in an armor-plated stretch Hummer everywhere, I will be accused of waste and self-importance. It would seem to be easy to simply ignore the attention and focus on my own pleasure. But I know that deep inside; I like to be liked by others. Even though I am in a dominant group in society, I do not know if this is possible for the mega-rich because of the constant media scrutiny of their every move.
